From Drab to Dream
My Italian Marble Kitchen Makeover
When we moved into our home, the kitchen was firmly stuck in the 1990s: dated cabinets, outdated hardware, dark counters, and old appliances. As a family that lives for cooking—fresh pasta nights, holiday feasts, everyday meal prep—we needed a space that was both functional and beautiful.
We gutted it to the studs and reimagined every detail: refinished cabinets, new hardware, top-tier appliances, modern plumbing, and the centerpiece—Italian marble countertops.
The Transformation
The original kitchen was a time capsule of cherry cabinets, dark granite, fluorescent lighting, and aging appliances. We tore everything down to the studs and started fresh. The cabinets were refinished in crisp white with matte black hardware. We installed professional-grade appliances and chose Carrara marble countertops with their distinctive natural veining.
I’d always been drawn to Italian marble’s creamy tones and elegant patterns, but its porous nature gave me pause. Would it hold up to our daily cooking? I looked at hundreds of slabs and considered practical alternatives like quartz, but marble won out.
After two years of heavy use—all that sauce-splashing and bread-baking—the counters needed attention. I found Tim Lesnar at Classic Marble Restoration, who uses a specialized refinishing technique. It’s not simply polishing; it’s a trained process that seals and protects the stone, making it durable enough for everyday life.
The Reality of Marble
Italian marble brings timeless beauty to a kitchen, and with proper care and refinishing services, it’s more practical than many people assume. The transformation took our kitchen from a dated 90s space to a functional, beautiful room that works as hard as it looks good—perfect for everything from morning coffee to dinner parties.
If you’re considering marble for your own kitchen, visit local stone yards to find a slab that works for your space, and ask about refinishing options to maintain it over time.
