When Steve and I bought our fixer-upper, we knew it would test our patience and vision. The house had solid bones but needed a complete overhaul. We've revamped the kitchen, bathrooms, and living areas, but the laundry room remains untouched.

It’s not that we’re avoiding it—okay, maybe a little. Shutting it down for even a week feels daunting with our busy schedules and daily chores. As I tell my real estate clients, short-term pain yields long-term gain. A well-designed laundry room can turn a repetitive task into a moment of calm and efficiency.

• Quick Refresh ($300-800): Paint, lighting, organization, accessories.

• Moderate Upgrade ($800-2,500): Countertop, sink, better storage, flooring.

• Full Remodel ($2,500-8,000+): Custom cabinetry, high-end appliances, luxury finishes.

Planning Your Laundry Room Remodel

• Countertop for Folding

  • Impact: A countertop reduces clutter and streamlines folding.

  • Budget Option ($100-300): Use butcher block or laminate from IKEA or Home Depot, easy to cut and customize.

  • Luxury Option ($400-800+): Quartz or granite for durability and style.

  • Tip: Ensure 24-inch depth for folding; extend over washer/dryer. Add an overhang for seating.

    

    Electrical and Lighting

  • Essentials: GFCI outlets near water, adequate outlets for appliances, 240V for dryers.

  • Lighting: Use bright LED lights; add under-cabinet strips to reduce shadows. Windows enhance ambiance.

  • Tip: Place outlets at counter height for steamers or chargers.

• Washer and Dryer Layout

  • Stacked Units: Save space for small rooms but may reduce ergonomics.

  • Side-by-Side: Ideal for larger spaces, easier access, supports countertop.

  • Raised Pedestals: Add storage and reduce bending for comfort.

  • Tip: Verify stackable machines and ventilation for stacking; check doorway access for delivery.

  • Luxury ($1,000-3,000+): Custom cabinets, pull-out drawers, built-in hampers.

  • Essentials: Spots for laundry types, seasonal storage, child-safe supply organization.

  • Tip: Use closed storage for detergents; keep frequent items accessible.

• Utility Sink

  • Impact: Adds versatility for stains, soaking, or cleaning.

  • Budget ($100): Freestanding plastic sink with basic faucet.

  • Luxury ($300-700+): Stainless steel or ceramic farmhouse sink with pull-down faucet.

  • Tip: Place near washer with a shelf for detergents.

  

  Hanging and Air-Drying

  • Budget ($30-80): Wall-mounted folding rack or retractable clothesline.

  • Luxury ($200-400): Built-in rod with shelf for folded clothes.

  • Tip: Ensure ventilation to prevent mildew; consider a fan for humid climates.

For a full remodel, invest in custom storage, a quality sink, and efficient appliances. Do the project in phases if the budget is tight—start with electrical and lighting, then add storage and countertops, and finish with luxury touches.
